What is the difference between Community Participation and Service Learning?
Community Participation is a lower division University Learning Requirement (ULR), where as Service Learning is an upper division Graduation Learning Outcome (GLO) which is usually completed as part of your major. Please take note that both requirements can be satisfied using courses that have a Service Learning designation. For example, HPWE 271S fulfills Community Participation but CST 361S fulfills the Service Learning requirement for TMAC majors. Students must complete Community Participation first.
Students who transferred to CSUMB with 56 units and Area D of the CSU GE Breadth certified are not held to the lower division Community Participation requirement.
All students who graduate from CSUMB must complete the Service Learning requirement. To find out which courses complete the Service Learning requirement for your major, contact your major advisor or The Undergraduate Advising Center.
What are the EPT and ELM and do I need to take them?
The English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Math (ELM) test are placement tests designed to assess reading, writing, algebra and geometry skills. All nonexempt undergraduate students prior to placement in appropriate university English and Mathematics coursework must take them.
For a listing of the possible exemptions please see the Testing section of Student Services.
Depending on what your score on the ELM and /or EPT was, you may have to enroll in required prerequisite(s) prior to completing the MATHCOM requirement and the ENGCOM A requirement. In order to find out if your score places you in one of these categories contact The Undergraduate Advising Center.
I would like to transfer to another CSU or UC. What do I need to do?
The first step in transferring to another University is to apply. For information on the application process, you can contact the school you would like to transfer to or, for very general questions, make an appointment with an advisor in the Undergraduate Advising Center.
The units for any baccalaureate-level courses (courses numbered 100 or higher) will transfer (this does not include any remedial courses, such as MATH 98 or WRT 95), and our ULRs DO translate into the CSU GE Breadth for those students transferring to a CSU. The CSU you are transferring to will evaluate your ULR coursework and apply it to your GE areas according to the policies of that school.
For specific information on how CSUMB ULR courses may transfer to another CSU for GE Breadth, please contact the Undergraduate Advising Center. Our office can not provide information on how CSUMB ULR courses will transfer to a UC or private institution and we can not provide information on how CSUMB major courses will transfer in to the major at any other institution. You will need to contact your intended institution for that information.
Can I take classes at a community college to meet the ULRs?
For students already enrolled here at CSUMB, the answer is yes. You should view the Articulation web site at http://articulation.csumb.edu/articulation-home for specific instructions on how to be sure you are taking the right courses.
How do I find out who my Advisor is?
If you have not yet completed your general education requirement or ULRs, then you will have been assigned an advisor by the Undergraduate Advising Center. You can see the name of your advisor on your CMS PeopleSoft account, or contact our office by calling 831.582.3937 or e-mail the Academic Advisor at academic_advisor@csumb.edu. If you are a new student, you may see that you are assigned to Academic Advising. Any advisor in the Advising Center can help you and you will eventually be assigned to an individual advisor.
Can I get advising on my major at the Academic & Career Advising Services center as well as my ULRs?
The Undergraduate Advising Center focuses on University requirements, such as University Learning Requirements (ULRs) and Graduation Learning Outcomes (GLOs). In addition, we provide students with general major and career exploration services, but we do not advise on major information. For information on major requirements, please see your major advisor or major advising department.
What happens if I get a 'NC' or 'F' in one of my classes?
A grade of 'NC' or 'No Credit', means that you did not receive credit towards the completion of a course or assessment. Although this is a non-passing grade, it will not be included in the calculation of your Grade Point Average (GPA).
A grade of 'F' or 'Fail' also means that you did not receive credit towards the completion of the course or assessment. However, 'F' marks are non-passing grades that are calculated into your GPA. Students who receive financial aid may be placed under financial aid probation or disqualification if a minimum number of required units are not passed during a designated academic term.
Close attention should be paid by all students to grades. If you are increasingly receiving failing grades, you may be placed under academic probation and/or academic disqualification.
How can I find out where I am with the (ULR) University Learning Requirements?
Make an appointment with an Academic Advisor Call (831) 582-3937, for more information.
I am now fluent in a second language. How can I get credit for it?
You may register for the Language Assessment just like a regular class. Just see the schedule of classes for the language you plan to assess. Complete the registration process for the required number of semesters. Contact the Department of World Languages and Cultures for more information. 831.582.3863.
